Help with a messaging client, please

I use pidgin for my aim client. Recently, it began displaying "lost connection with server. remote host closed connection", followed by "server closed the connection." Trying to reconnect yields the second message anew.
The only thing I can align with the problem was my trying to "set AIM status" in winamp's firefox toolbar.

any help? appreciated

::EDIT::
Upon trying again: a message came up stating an error associated with installed software on the system.
A few seconds after that- a new message stated
"you have been connecting and disconnecting too frequently. wait ten minutes and try again. if you continue to try, you will need to wait even longer."

after running 100% stable for 6 months pidgin has been giving me issues too (logging off, error messages when logging on, etc)

Could it be that you (and me) need to update the plugins which are used to connect to the various services?

well that's the thing; I didn't install any plugins- didn't alter the pidgin program at all. So, I figured uninstalling the firefox winamp toolbar would remedy things- but it hasn't. Even the portableapps varient doesn't work. I'm thinking of trying the portable version on a different computer/connection to ensure AIM isn't causing the problems.
Do you think finding a winamp status changer plugin might override any interfering code running in the bg, and allow pidgin to work again?
