So I am in my sophomore year of college, and have no idea what to do anymore. I am transferring to a different univ. next year, and want to make sure I don't waste time/money studying something that I won?t use. Right now I am leaning towards accounting just by default, but unsure if I can "hang" since I am not the most motivated person. I do however love working with computers, and am pretty knowledgeable despite no proper training. So I was thinking as a backup plan, to get a 2 year degree in networking or anything IT related really. But then if I do that, I don?t know about job security. Lost, any advice from the all-knowing atot community?

cliffs (if anyone reads)
-sophomore in college, transferring schools
-unsure about future career
-switch from accounting to IT degree?
-what to do, what to do

info systems audit? would I still need some type of degree in computers?

No, accounting major and minor in MIS if available (but not required).

does this happend to be what you do?

I was in financial audit, but I know plenty of 1337 computer g33ks who were accounting majors that did IS audit instead of financial.

Great thing about accounting major and going into audit is that after 2 years you can do whatever da fvck you want. And in audit you do not do any accounting. In fact you may never end up using anything you learned in school.

Winner!

But man I hate IT auditors.

-edit-
and don't stress about your major. Just get your degree - that's pretty much all that matters.

bit of advice....get used to it.

The path you have in your mind now will continually change over time due to circumstances beyond your control. Bend grasshopper, but don't break.

Yes, they are cocky as fvck and very difficult to deal with. I can pwn a financial auditor anyday, but IS auditors are a bit difficult.

Funny. I take pleasure in owning them (IS auditors) all the time. Just have to know how to play the game.

1) IS auditor asks dumb question that their book told them to ask
2) Answer with one sentence or one word that doesn't give them the answer they want
3) Continue
4) If they press - just say "I'll need some documentation and form from you in order to actually answer that question. We're done here."
5) Repeat #4

-edit- tip for dealing with IT auditors...don't say jack squat and divert the questioning to them and their abilities and away from the company. This is where skills in body language and psychology come in hand.

Ummmmm you dont' really need a degree to go into IT, just pacatical knowledge. A certification or 2 helps for some jobs but those are easy if you know your stuff. I went into tech b/c my degree didn't lead to any jobs and I'm a geek and always have been.

My brother did IS audit for a few years. He was an accounting/finance major and a certified systems auditor and doesn't even know how to add a hard drive.
The hardest part of the job was the constant travel.

i guess i didnt realize how broad accy can be. I guess a degree in accy and then applying it to the IT industry somehow wouldn't be half bad.

If you have a degree in anything remotely technical and a love for tech you can get a job. Business and sales experience also helps a lot when you want to move up in pay.
