I'm looking to upgrade my system. I've put together a Pentium4 upgrade in my budget.
P4 1.6Ghz
Asus P4B i845 (socket 478)
256mb SDRAMM
Asus GeForce3 TI200 Deluxe.
60gb H/D

This comes to roughly $1300 Canadian.

I read a few reviews on this motherboard, and most are positive on it, but a few mentioned that a AMD setup could be purchased Faster and cheaper then the P4. I'm not the overclocker, I just like stability and speed. I know nothing about AMD M/B's. All I've noticed is that most AMD motherboards support DDR Ram and the P4 I've chosen does not. Could someone suggest a better AMD combo within my price. Also, I do not want to go below 256mb's of RAM.

If it helps (for any combatility problems), the rest of my old system going with this is:
SB Live value
Plextor CDRW
Windows 2000 pro
old 5400 13gig HD (as slave) ?
ps2 mouse
ps2 kb
USB Scanner

thanks in advance for advice.
A informed choice is a good choice :)

thx, ok I checked Anand latest review of KT266A M/B's. The Abit KR7a with a XP Athlon 1600 (1.4ghz) falls in with my budget. Will this be faster/slower then the p4 1.6ghz ?
Sorry, I should put in title somewhere Cdn $'s:eek:

By the way, I use this site http://www.pccanada.com/ for putting together system. It updates price as u change components in the quote area.

That was the combo I'd have chosen, just dump the rest of the money into cpu if you have any left over.

Yes an AMD XP1600+ with a KT266A motherboard will be faster than a P4 1.6 gHz.

Does anyone know if Intel sells a 1.6 gHz P4 Northwood?

Significantly faster.

I'd spend the savings on more RAM - 256mb is relatively low by today's standards...
