Help with 2 routers

Hi,

I have 2 routers

Router #1 is Asus N66U (used with my regular ISP)
Router #2 is Asus AC68U (used to run OpenVPN with PIA)

I have it connected like this:

Modem connected to WAN on router #1 (192.168.1.1), then LAN from router #1 connected to WAN of router #2 (192.168.2.1). I have given router #2 a static ip of 192.168.1.2

Each router is running a DHCP server. I cannot connect to either one with no issues.

I have a OpenVPN running on router #2 and everything works perfectly.

The problem I have is I cannot connect to any machine connected to router #2 from a machine on router #1.
I can connect to a machine on router #1 but I have to use the IP address because it does not seem to recognize the machine name. I would like to use the machine name but not sure what I need to do.

I enabled remote support on router #2 so now I can access the web settings page on router #2 from a computer connected to router #1

Please help

Run a single DHCP server on the first router.

Do not connect anything to the WAN port of router 2, use LAN only.

Will that still give me 2 networks (192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1) or will everything be on 192.168.1.1

So I can still use static ip of 192.168.1.2 on router #2

Sorry - I am new to using 2 routers on the same network

At the moment that you use two Routers as Router there is No more same Network (even if physicaly they are installed in the same location).

This twp links are written for a specific use but if you read them in general with open mind they illustrate the two basic options with two Wireless Routers.

Using Wireless Routers (or Modem/Wireless Router) as a Switch with an Access Point - http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

Network Segregation - http://www.ezlan.net/shield.html

Hi,

I would like to use the machine name but not sure what I need to do.

In general it can be done in the Host File.

This link describe Host File in general.

http://www.ezlan.net/host.html

One line like this -

# No need to type the IP the Main computer you can type Main into Address Bar.
192.168.0.1 Main

E.g. This will attach the word Main to the computer that its IP is 192.168.0.1

This specific way to work in Win 7/10
