Help! - WinXP Problem

I have to large files with raw data that I'm need to combine in notepad so I can plot the data using some plotting software that I have. One of the files is ~100MB and the other is ~200MB. Problem is, when I try to copy and paste the data from the smaller file to the larger file in notepad, it gives me an error saying "not enough memory available to complete this operation. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory and then try again." When I go into the processes tab it shows that one of the instances is using ~486MB of memory and the other ~240MB.

This PC has 4GB of RAM installed so I don't understand why this happens, or more importantly how to fix it. Help!!!

1st thought: I would try renaming them and using a file splitter/joiner. I have never done this, but if the files were really meant to be joined this might do it. I use mastersplitter on a regular basis.

2nd thought: Sounds like your error maybe due to memory limitations of notepad. Try using wordpad or even word.

I thought it might have something to do with a limitation of notepad. I tried wordpad but it wouldn't paste the data after I copied it from the first file. It didn't freeze, it just wouldn't do anything. I don't have office installed so i didn't try word but I will install it tomorrow morning when I get to work and try it out.

I am not sure why this is happening. But, may be you have other processes running that use too much RAM.
You may want to try increasing the pagefile size and see if that fixes the problem.

Also, you can copy the 100M file to a working folder and reduce its size gradually and see at what point the problem goes away. That may give you a clue.

There aren't any other processes running that are taking up any significant amount of RAM. Tomorrow morning I'll try and set the pagefile to something larger. I already had tried setting it to let windows manage it for me but that didn't work.
