i have an old p166 with 128mb ram, running win98se

i tried to boot up this morning and it hangs at the Windows 98 splash screen. Last night when i tried to shutdown, it didn't shutdown properly because some program wasn't responding. So i just turned off the computer. i didn't think this was a big deal.

now the computer hangs at the splash screen. It loads into safe mode fine, but not into normal mode.

please help
thx in advance

nope i haven't

i'll try that once i get home.
what will a scandisk fix? if windows boots into safe mode, then why doesn't it boot normal?

thx

It might be lost clusters preventing boot up. Usually when you can't get into normal mode, it's a registry problem. But try scandisk first.

thx andy

i fixed it. but it wasn't a bad cluster/registry problem. it was a network problem. i think what was happening was that windows was waiting for a response from my dhcp (@home) server. but, the rj45 was disconnected from the nic. took a few minutes to figure it out, but i finally fixed it and everything's fine.

thx andy 🙂

I had the same problem with a program to log on to my DSL provider. It would wait for the service to load and if it was down or whatnot, I'd have to wait for it to thyme out.
