HELP! Windows fails to boot after CPU-Burn caused restart

ok, I just got an 1800+ DLT3C JIUHB 0308 from newegg to overclock. I new I would be limited with my current setup (no pci/agp bus lock, slow ram, etc.), but I figured I could o/c a little. obviously must have set FSB too high initially b/c CPU-burn caused a restart after a few seconds. I figured no big deal, just lower the FSB, but now windows won't even start at default speeds. machine POSTs fine and windows loads, but then no welcome screen. windows error screen flashes for split second (way too fast to read), then automatically reboots. I really don't want to have to reinstall windows so what's the best way to fix this? recovery console or what? oh yeah, I'm running winxp pro.

Go to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r/f and if that doesn't do the trick try fixboot and fixMBR options from the RC and if it still is FUBARed do the repair install which doesn't change your files or settings.

weird stuff is goin on. I get error msg even when trying to start recovery console. I have gotten rc to start before and chkdsk froze. also I've since seen the welcome screen, but it restarts when I click to login. error msg says various stuff like try safe mode (which I haven't done yet) and it also has Technical Information:

if those mean anything to you. I guess those are addresses of some sort? well anyway gonna try fix MBR and chkdsk some more. when you say "repair install", is that where you select to install windows, then repair? b/c that's what I'm assuming.

Was there any other info following the number string? There are many 8E errors depending on the info after the string. Are you using generic or cheap ram? Ram compatability issues cause it as well as bad ram. Also PC-Cillin can cause it if you have it installed. BTW, do you have SP1 installed? If not do so as that came up for an 8E error as well. There are many others but if that's all it said then start with the RAM.

if worse comes to worse just install windows on another harddrive, get all the files you need and reinstall again..

then again i guess most people don't have an extra 60 gig hard drive just laying around

I am running cheap kingston valueram PC2100 CL2.0, but memtest86 checked out fine at 150 FSB. I ran after the CPU-burn reboot, so since memtest86 doesn't run from windows, there were no problems. no mem errors after one complete pass. I'm pretty sure it was the agp/pci bus that f*cked things up. sp1 is installed, pc-cillin is not. I think I'm stuck with the repair install and hopefully that will fix it. will it delete anything like MyDocuments folder?

ok, now I'm starting to get a little worried. when I tried to repair windows, it freezes after selecting the installation to repair at 3% once, then tried again and froze at 6%. I'm going to try repair a bit more before I give up, but will a format of this drive definitely fix all problems or is it possibly f*cked up for life?

ok, wtf is "BAD_POOL_CALLER"? it's an error I get from windows. it's not starting from a different windows install now. this one on a different hard drive.

Bad_Pool_Caller info It looks like you have something installed it's not playing nice with, are you installing windows with a barebones setup or do have PCI cards installed?

If your motherboard doesn't have a PCI lock, you may have taken the PCI clock too high, and hard drives are very sensative to that... causes data corruption, you may have corrupted data necessary for Windows to boot.

I'm getting all kinds of errors. Windows will not start correctly (tried two different hard drives) and it won't even get through a repair (keeps freezing at some point). The cpuburn program is from [L=here]http://users.ev1.net/~redelm/[L], I ran the k7 burn for only a few seconds in windows at 150fsb before all went to hell. I had previously run the program successfully using the same exact setup and with no errors when o/c'ing my Palamino to 140fsb. As a sidenote, is this program better than prime95 to test for stability? Anyway, what I'm confused about is why NEITHER of my windwos installs will work when I only did the cpuburn on one of them. Is a PCI card or HD physically corrupted, and if so is that fixable? I have PCI firewire, network, modem cards installed along with two hard drives (mult. partitions on each) and a DVD burner installed. I have since tried a different stick of ram with no luck (same brand/specs as other stick, maybe try crucial/micron stick?). Never had a problem in the past with these sticks or any of the other hardware. I'll try w/o PCI cards next I guess. I appreciate the help so far. I am freaking out.

Last time I got errors loading windows turned out to be bad ram.I ran memtest86 and found a defective stick.I was using to sticks of dual channel memory.Sounded like you did fry something possibly.Try replacing peice by piece to see.If you know a buddy that you can borrow a stick of ram or try another cpu,power supply and so on until you find what it is.

I ran memtest86 on the ram after the fry and it checked out ok, so I'm pretty sure that's not it.
