I get this message...

Your network adapter Intel 21041 based Ethernet Controller (0001) is not working properly. You may need to set it up again. For more Information, see the Network Troubleshooter In Windows Help.

I just did a fresh install of Win98se. It's a Netgear FA 310tx Rev 2.
p3-650e, abit be6-II, wd expert drive and ibm 75xp drive connected to the udma-66 HPT366 controller. adaptec 2940u, 2 plextor drives.

I usually do a format/install every 5 months. this is the first time this happened.

In Device Manager it says the device is either not present, not working or does not have all the drivers installed (code 10)
IRQ14, no conflicts.i/o range is c400-crff

I installed the correct driver, and it'll still say it, but now ssays the Netgear FA310tx Fast Ethernet PCI adapter(0001)

I tried switching out the nic card, same thing..

Any ideas?? What am I doing wrong?

Regards,
Bobby

Keep the NIC in PCI slot 2 or 3. Win9x does poorly with hardware, and it's possible that you still have settings in the registry for the erroneous Intel NIC install that are interfering. If both NICs show in device manager, the simple fix is to remove both, reboot, and then reinstall the correct one. If the Intel doesn't show in device manager or Add/Remove hardware, its settings would be more difficult to remove. You could try removing the NIC from the motherboard, reboot and hope that all NICs disappear from the registry - but seldom happens. It can be done by manually editing the registry, but that can get complicated. If no one else suggests a simpler way, you could do a fresh win98 reinstall. W2k seldom has this problem.

Run the diagnostics that come on the netgear driver floppy from dos. This will a least tell you if the card is functioning properly. If it is its a windows driver problem.
