There must have been some corrupted files. I'm not sure if this will work... boot into safemode, try see if you can uninstall any of the last thing that got installed.

Or boot into safemode & see if it will allow you to install sp1 from safe mode.

Otherwise, you might have to reinstall Windows 2000 from the beginning.

Re-installing my be my problem... I have a duel boot with win98se and I made the 2k partitions NTFS. Anyone know a quick way to fix this? Also, I was thinking about getting the whole thing setup and making a Ghost image of the 1. whole hardrive or 2. each partition. Any suggestions? I could really use the help here...

Can someone tell me how I can just delete the NTFS partitions and then JUST re-install WIN2k and not have to blown away the whole harddrive and start again.

here is my config.
Dell Dimension XPS T500
500
128 mg pc100 sdramn
30 gb Maxtor
5 Partitions:
c:win98 OS FAT32
d:win2k OS NTFS <-- Need to get rid of these?
e:win2k program files NTFS <-- "" " " " " "
f:win98 program files FAT32
g:Storage files FAT32

Can I use my 98 boot disk and get into fdisk and blow away the partitions? will the duel boot still work?

Any help is much appreciated...

Have you created the Win2k bootdisks?

If not, you can use another Windows PC to create them. You can find an .exe file on the Win2k CD which creates them.

These (4) disks enable you to do lotsa stuff and are at least 500% better than the Win98 bootdisk.

BTW the fdisk on the Win98 bootdisk doesn't recognize NTFS partitions, you'll definitely need the Win2k bootdisks for it, or another program, like Partition Magic.

I did make the 2k boot disks last night. but I got so frustrated that I went out. What should I do now? delete the NTFS partitions? What can I do then to get my machine running back the way it was before??? (with the 5 partitions and the duel boot.)

I don't know why the Critical Update install crapped out on you, but...

One of the first steps of the Win2k installation is to choose which partition you want it installed to. Choose to perform a NEW installation, then delete the current NTFS partition and reinstall Win2k. As it installs, it should see the other OS's installed and modify the bootloader as it did before. Everything should work as it did before with the dual boot.

You can definitely make an image of the entire hdd (all partitions included) for future needs.

Much appreciated....

Try booting using your Win2K cd.

Follow instruction on the blue screen, then choose system recovery console, follow instruction.

You don't have to reinstall the whole thing.
