HELP!!! Win2K keeps logging me off immediately :(

OT gets the most readership, so my chances of getting help here are better (hopefully). Please help, if possible. 🙂

Hey people. If anybody can help me with this, I will be INFINTELY grateful.

So from one reboot to the next, when I go to log into my Win2K (SP2) system, as soon as I put in the correct password, I get the "Loading personal settings..." message. As soon as that goes away, I get the "Saving personal settings..." message and then get booted back to the log on screen (ie, behaving as if I just logged off). So I assume something is automatically logging me out of the system! 🙁 What could it be!? And more importantly, how can I fix it!?

ANY and ALL help is GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks a million!
 
try to login in as another account, maybe the admin account, you do have another account besides the admin right? right? or you do know the admin account for that machine.

Yeah, that'd be cool, but there's more. 🙁 First, as a disclaimer, I have to mention this is my girlfriend's computer. Now that that's out of the way, she has two accounts. Her normal one (with admin access) and the admin, of course. Get this, she forgot her admin password. Oh goody... 🙁

Again, help. *gulp!* 🙁

I believe it's "Last known good hardware configuration."

And it'll only do that if you have multiple ones installed.
 
I saw this just a couple weeks ago. What it turned out to be for my customer was somehow the perms on the her profile and the critical system files - the guts of the OS like the shell (explorer.exe) - had been set such that the account logging on didn't have access. You're going to need another valid account in the administrator's group, or the password to the local admin account. Get that account to log on and add admin perms for your GF to C$ and other drives (apply changes to all sudirectories). Short of that, I can't think of any way around it.

You can try "Last known good" but I've never had much luck with that personally.
 
More specifically, its the NTUSER.dat file in the profile of the account you are trying to log onto. If you can get into the system with admin access, delete it and re-boot. It will create a new one.
 
I also had this happen to me, but it happend to all of my accounts, and only when I messed with a dynamic disk (IE, removed the dynamic disk without going through windows (used a partition program once, pulled the harddrive next). It happened twice to me in a span of 1 week, and I never figured it out.

Safe mode also didn't work...only the recovery console. I'll have to try that ntuser.dat fix though if it happens again.
 
I had a similar problem, but I got an additional error message about my swap file being too small. I booted to a Win98 floppy, and ran "FDISK /MBR", all has been well since.
 
Hmm... it could be the swap (paging) file issue. I'll try resolving that first, because I am getting an error about the paging file size right before getting booted out. If not, I'll try killing off NTUSER.dat. I'll report back.

If you have any other suggestions, I am more than willing to try them. Thanks again! 😀 Wish me luck!

I had a similar issue when I tried to install an HP Scanner in Win2K Pro
 
damn so THAT'S how you fix that swap file issue.. i never did figure that out. what i usually do is go boot up the win2k cd and run a repair.. pain in the ass.. this problem usually happens when i ghost a hd
