When I boot into Win2k, at first (by viewing device manager primary ide controller) it says the drive is running in Ultra DMA mode, but afew moments after running some things, I develop 5 of these errors in Event Viewer:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11
Date: 11/1/2000
Time: 9:07:48 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SUPERMATTY
Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0.
Data:
0000: 04 00 18 00 01 00 72 00 ......r.
0008: 00 00 00 00 0b 00 04 c0 .......À
0010: 01 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0018: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0020: 00 7c 86 15 00 00 00 00 .|†.....
0028: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0030: 00 00 00 00 2a 00 00 00 ....*...
0038: 02 8f 00 00 03 08 04 00 .?......
And then, upon checking primary ide controller in device manager, it says the drive is running in PIO mode, which appears to be very correct, since all IDE operations I run seem to slow the system to a crawl, including copying from the CD-ROm to hard drive, and defragmenting. My configuration is an Abit KT7 (non-raid) motherboard, thunderbird 1 ghz, 256 mb micron cas2 ram, and a maxtor 27.2 gb u66 hard drive. I am fairly certain I have the cable wired correctly, set as master, with the blue end in the motherboard, and the other end in the drive, with the gray end hanging unattached in the middle. I did install the VIA 4-in-1 update, but as you may know, this doesn't update the IDE controller drivers if you are running Win2k, well atleast not on mine it didn't, and it said the reason was because I was running Win2k.
Anyone who can help, will be appreciated, I'm ready for my 1 ghz system to run like it's 1 ghz.

Device manager-primary ide controller (properties)-select dma
Via 4n1 don't set it to dma/udma automatically like in 98

Ummmm, I don't think you read my post correctly. Via 4-in-1 DOES NOT update the IDE controllers in Win2k. And yes, I have it already set to 'DMA if available,' however, it reverts back to PIO mode after a few moments of activity and after I get those 5 errors in event viewer. :disgust:
