I am trying to install XP SP1 on the following config:
MSI K8T NEO-FIS2R
AMD 64 3000
Alpha heat sink (PAL8150M81)
Sapphire ATI 9600 Pro
Samsung SATA 120gb (sp1213c)
Geil PC-3200 2x256m (GL5123200dc)
LG GSA4082BI DVD +/-RW
XASER III VM2420AU with 420 watt ps

I can get XP to see the SATA HD using the on board VIA controller and the included drives supplied by MSI.
The issue I am having is that XP will start the install, it will re-boot the computer and start to take me through the setup. I will get to the finalization step and the computer will freeze. When I re-boot the process repeats and I can never get past that point.

I have spent the last 3 nights trying to get XP installed with no luck. Any help would be great.

Thanks!

underclock the CPU

problem solved.

If you're overclocking right now...don't.

Windows installation will most likely freeze druing install on an overclocked computer

That statement only holds truth for unstable overclocked systems.

Have you run Memtest on it?

There is a BIOS file dated 4/1 that might be worth trying out if you're not already on that version. I've also fixed problems by flashing to a previous BIOS version.

It's not overheating is it?

You could run a HD diagnostic.

yeah actually that's true.

But on one unusual occasion, I forgot to set my clock settings to default when i reinstalled. I figured it was ok because my overclocked system passed memtest, cpuburn...

so u never know

Run Prime95 and see if it's stable. Most likely it is not if you overclocked the cpu again. ;)

Thanks for pointing me to prime95. The first few times I ran it, it failed and this was with the cpu under clocked. After reading the stress.txt document I tried under clocking the memory. My memory is the problem it can not run at 400mhz and cas 2. So I am RMAing the memory and am going to pick a new brand. BTW - the CPU at its normal clocking 2.0ghz was runnig at 45c under a full prime95 stress test.

Again thanks for all of the help.

Anandtech forums are the best.
