Windows XP Pro keeps shutting down my computer..........for some reason when I was online today, windows popped up a screen that says it needs to shut down windows and restart. Well, it keeps doing this each time it restarts and I get back online (dial-up). This is what the message says:

This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. The shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

Time before shutdown: (some time)

MESSAGE:

Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly.

What is causing this and how do I stop it? Thanks

You have been hit by the W32.Blaster.Worm. See the Windows Update site, and our sticky thread in this forum.

Thanks for the links, although can you briefly tell me what the rammifications are to my computer as a result of recieving this error (does that mean my computer has been tampered with in some way?)

ok if you need to stop your machine fro restarting to download the fix go into services and under the recovery tab in the RPC properties change the failure actions from restart the computer to restart the service. that should stop the system from restarting then you cand run the security updates to plug the hole. This doesn't stop the attack just the restarts you still need to plug the holes with the updates

Well, I installed the patch from microsoft's download site and haven't been kicked off since but my Norton Anti-Virus (Corporate Edition) keeps thinking it found a worm virus, but I am pretty sure it is just the microsoft patch I installed. Is there a way to stop my virus scanner from thinking there is a virus?

Not saying that it couldn't happen, but I have yet to see Norton AV report a MS patch as a worm. You may still have remnants of the original worm there and that is what NAV is picking up.

Try killing the MSBLAST.EXE process as soon as it reboots and see if you can grab the patch then..

Chances are it's there. Have her make sure she is looking at processes and not applications. If she could print out the directions for removing the worm and then boot into safe mode and get rid of it she may gain enough time before she gets hit again to grab the patch and then do everything over.

have her turn on the built in xp firewall it is under the network adapter properties in the advanced tab

Sorry about that blank post. Any ways..........how do I get rid of this worm??? Norton can't seem to quarentine it or delete it.
