xtreme,
Not for sure, but, try this reg tweak.
I think it solves it in win 2k since the check mark option is removed from IE advanced settings in Win 2k.

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BrowseNewProcess]
@="yes"

Also might try it under HKEY_Current_User

let me know if it works.

Holy sh!t

thanks for that fix

it works 🙂

I just do the fix inside the current_user key, no need to do the 'user' key as I am the only one using the account. Also, there is no such 'tree' in the 'user' branch. It is much better now since if IE crash, it wont bring down Explorer.exe

Glad it helped.

Found that about a year ago when scrounging for Win 2k tweaks.
Kinda forgot about it 'cause I saved the .reg file and everytime i reformat\reinstall that is one of the first registry edits I execute.

Can't remember where I first read it though 🙁

With the reg tweak, did you add @="yes" in that folder or was it already there, because I am not seeing that entry. BTW, iexplorer.exe runs as its own process under a different account on my PC.

I changed the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BrowseNewProcess
from no to yes

Thanks, xtreme and kroc that fixed my problem and iexplorer is now running as its own program. I am just wondering what changed that value, because other users under Win2k did not have this problem for me.

That is strange 'cause as I understood it, browse in new process is set to NO by default (forcing Explorer to browse).

That is why I always apply the setting on any new install.
Maybe it changed in Win 2k SP1?

Is your Win 2k installed fresh or did you upgrade over Win 98 (where that setting may have been applied already)?

I seriously dont know how and when it was changed. I did a clean install of Win2000 about 6 months ago, then patched the SP1 instantly, upgrade to IE5.01SP1. And basically it has been left like that. Although I do keep my patches updated this 'process' thingy only came up a few weeks ago, which I dont think I did anything major (or even minor) to my system.

???Weird???

Can't imagine why it would change either

As I said earlier, I don't know why it was ever set to yes in the first place as I was pretty sure the install default is "no". (could be wrong of course)

I'll have to check that on my next install (before I apply the reg fix) and then after installing SP1 and patches to see if it changes anything.

take care
