Here's what I've narrowed down to so far ...

So, you can see that I've narrowed it down to either a 256MB X1950XT vs. a 512MB X1950PRO, with the players being HIS, Powercolor, and Sapphire. Bottomline, is a X1950XT that much faster than a X1950PRO ?

Also, I'm not familiar with HIS, are they OK ? and does any one company do a better job with their VIVO implementation than the others ?

Thanx ...

Get the Sapphire X1950XT. All the PCBs are the same reference design, and the 25MHz core overclock on the HIS is not worth the extra $50. The extra pixel pipelines of the XT 256MB yield a greater performance improvement than the extra memory of the 512MB Pro. Plus, the X1950XT is cheapest.

I'd go for the 320MB 8800 GTS. There is an XFX for $290 shipped at zipzoomfly.

Thanks guys.

I was looking at the HIS being worth more for its better cooling, actually. Plus, Sapphire's rep is gutter-level at best (see appoppin' for details ...).

As for any nVidia referrals ... thanks but no thanks. I just got rid of an XFX 7800 GT OC that was a darn nice card except for THE SAME CRAPPY WASHED OUT COLORS THAT nVIDIA CAN'T SEEM TO FIX SINCE THE ORIGINS OF THE GF SERIES.

Sorry about the rant ... ;)

If you want an X1950 card, why not wait for the release AMD's next generation of GPUs in March? Prices should drop then and open up even more buying options.

If it is something you plan to keep for 18 months or so, DX10 would be beneficial.

Get the cheapest 256Mb X1950 Pro, then. It'll server you very well at 1280*1024 and lower, and you can save the cash to put forward to a mainstream D3D10 card during the summer.

i would go with the 256mb card versus the 512mb. it will hold you over till ATI new cards come out later this year. you work hard for your money (unless rich then disregard) make it count. these cards are no slouch and if you want an ati card that is worth it and Very hard to find look for the X1900 AIW. i have one and i love it!

Umm, anyone who would pay $10 less for an X1950 Pro, over an X1950XT needs their head examined. The XT has roughly 50% more performance. For $10 more, that makes it a no-brainer.
