I bought this as a barebone laptop and upon the HDD I ordered coming in today....I found out the square peg doesn't fit the round hole (if you get my drift)

search on google told me that this model uses a SATA laptop HDD

the HDD i bought was a 160gb SATA Seagate Momentus

and heres a pic of the internal of the laptop:

now without dragging this on.....what the heck should I have bought? IDE? first instinct would be to get that right now but i figured I'd ask first this time :p

thanks in advance.

Um, do you have a better picture? I can barely tell what that is, but it looks like (to me) a proprietary connector of sorts... but i'm not sure why they would put that on a hard drive.

I really have no idea what that connector is... it doesn't quite look like SATA, or ATA6, so I fall back to my previous guess of proprietary connector, though not sure why that is needed for a hard drive. Is it possible that is the battery compartment?

its not the battery compartment. it even came with the HDD cage in there and the HDD I bought fits perfectly in there.....just for obvious reasons, its not meant to be there

uhh....?

closer inspection: same amount, and perfectly aligned with the pins on the SATA drive

a clue?

Huh, curiouser and curiouser, you checked the box for any connectors that might work for interfacing?

HP-Compaq laptops all use caddies that incorporate connector adapters. One should come with each laptop, and you remove the adapter andthe HDD from the caddy, and put in the new one, then the adapter and it will fit. The 160GB Seagate SATA Momentus will work just fine. The 2.5 drives are all alike - only difference today is PATA vs SATA. You must have the adapter.
