My dad's XP looks dead after all of 2 1/2 months usage. AMD wants to know the number printed on the retail fan, but I quickly replaced it w/ something or other bigger and better, so now I have to track down this damn fan.

Problem is, I have about 5 cooling fans laying around and I don't remember which one came with the cpu!!

Anybody know what AMD ships w/ their chips?

The retail fans just have a silver sticker with an AMD logo & a serial number.

I believe they're made by Taisol.

I emailed AMD a few weeks ago with the same question. This was AMD's reply on Feb 06:

Hello,

The brand of heat sink that comes with the boxed processor by AMD is a
Cooler Master DP5-6I31A.

AMD's warranty only stays in effect if the above heat sink and fan is
used with the retail boxed processor.

I hope this helps.

Good luck cheating AMD 😀

oh f@ck me - you invalidate the warranty if you use an AMD approved heatsink/fan because it isn't their dinky POS?!?

how about that I had to replace it because the cpu was overheating w/ their crappy little thing!

sheesh - cheating them? hardly - if they shipped a better heating solution, I wouldn't have had to replace it, which would have saved me $38.

I have had no trouble whatsoever with the retail cooling on my two TBird 1.2's. In fact I even removed the stock fan & replaced it with a quieter one, & I still had no trouble.

Nor do I expect to have any trouble with the retail cooling on the two 1800+'s I ordered today.
