Help w/ simple math

Heres the problem
Find the value of the expression
1 over 2 squared + 1 over 2=? When i look in the back of the book it says 3 over 4., but how do you get that? When i do the problem out like i think its supposed to be done, i get 1 over 8? Can someone help me out

1/2^2 + 1/2 = 1/4 + 1/2 = 1/4+2/4=3/4

Or it could be (1/(2^2+1)/2)

That'd be a little more complicated.

Is that (1/2)^2 Write it as a formula!!
Or is that 1/4+1/2 or 1/4 + 2/4=3/4 i.e. common denominator.


(1/2^2) + (1/4)=??

It is hard to say without parentheses in the right place

^2 = exponent of 2 or squared

He did write it as a formula, just he used words instead of symbols. You don't need parentheses. That is what the order of operations were created for.

"over" means to divide
"squared" means to square.

The only possible correct interpretation of what he wrote is:

1/2^2 +1/2

Which is exactly what five40 wrote.
