I am doing a fresh install on a new hard drive. Is there any way to get the startup disk to recongize the SCSI cdrom drives, so I can install off of the WinMe cdrom?

Try this for adaptec. Power on. Hit CTRL+A when you see a message about scsi bios. Look around for an advanced configuration option. Select it. Arrow down to "Enable support for cdrom" Set to enable. Exit saving changes. Reboot with cd in drive.

The instructions from maddmax will allow you to boot from the cd. But if the ME cd doesn't have the DOS drivers for your adapter, it still won't work.

I had to download DOS drivers and muck around with the boot disk to be able to install ME with an Adaptec 29160. It's a bit of a pain, but that is the hardest part of a SCSI install.

Well said meremortal, if you have a newer SCSI card which doesnt have dos support from the boot disk you will have to modify the dos driver file for the boot disk to install the controller ..another alternative is to use an ATAPI CDROM to install windows, install the controller drivers and remove the ATAPI drive when finished.

The Windows ME boot disk should have the drivers for the scci cd-rom . It worked for me anyway .

Depends on the age of the controller.. it supports a LOT of them, but a few arent supported yet, like the 29160 wasnt, but the 2940u2w was.. just a matter of them updating it..
