HELP w/ Aureal Reference Drivers

I just load the 2048 Aureal reverence drivers for my TB Montego II PCI sound card and can't help but notice that it always makes a copy of my autoexec.bat file called autoexec.vtx everytime I boot windows. Can anyone help me fix this?

Can you post the link to the drivers? I too have a Montego II, and can't get it to install right in Win 2K. It's a Dell OEM, so I hope these driver will work. I just want my AudioStation 32. Best equalization ever!!

Thanks, Rob

autoexec.vtx is just a backup copy of autoexec.bat that it is creating for you in case you ever uninstall the card. It's not going to hurt anything by it being there and takes up so little space it's no big deal. If you are trying to disable autoexec.bat, you can open it up with notepad and put REM in front of each line, save it, then reboot.....this will keep it from loading DOS drivers.

Unfortunately, Aureal went out of business before they could perfect any Win2K drivers. They DO have some, however. You can get them here. I and several others have found them to be quite a pain to install and even then they don't always work correctly.

TIP: Be sure to read the install instructions for Win2K for a LESS troublesome installation.

I sold my Aureal card's when I upgraded to windows 2000. They kind of fight over the processor and when i was listening to winamp the sound would kind of crack anytime that win2k used a few CPU cycles

Ugh, I think I'll just upgrade. Any suggestions? I'm more music than gaming (although I do play Madden 2K1 daily). Which should I get?

I have already rem out the statements I don't want in my autoexec.bat. I don't mind the .vtx file being there, but the fact that it wastes time verifying that the autoexec.bat is backed up everytime I boot bothers me somewhat. I am an optimization NUT and so I just wanted to know if anyone can remove it.

There are a lot of really good cards out now: Philips Acoustic Edge, Santa Cruz, SB Live series. You might want to do some searches on these in the forums and see what you think about other's experiences. I have an Acoustic Edge myself and am very satisfied with it. SB Live cards seem to be somewhat of a crapshoot with those who have AMD rigs....do a search and you'll see what I mean.

I don't have an AMD rig (being an Intel employee and all), and I really like how my Turtle Beach Montego II performs in Win 98. I absolutely LOVE the "AudioStation" software that comes with it. The equalizer on that thing is the best I've ever heard. My main concern is a card that works well with Windows 2000, and that has great music sound. Will probably go with a Santa Cruz.
