Hi all. My PC of 7-8 years finally died; it's replacement time. At first I was looking at budget gaming laptops as a desktop replacement/school laptop, but I'm not sure how feasible those are. Now I'm researching desktops, eploring the idea that I may be better off building a gaming pc now, and buying a cheaper laptop better suited for going back to school later.
Since I haven't looked at PCs since before PCI Express was released, I'm a bit overwhelmed, especially with motherboard features. I'm not sure what to skip over or what's worth paying extra for. USB 3.0? SATA 6.0? AMD vs Intel? I saw the new builders thread on page 4, but I still feel uncertain of how much of a practical difference there are between CPUs and chipsets. Similar to its predecessor, I expect that I'll be using this computer until it dies for good. I'll really appreciate your input.
1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Gaming, viewing video, Office Suite and internet browsing.
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
700-800; 850 if the performance upgrade is really justified. What kind of gaming performance should I expect from this budget?
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
U.S.A, and I do live near a Microcenter
4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
None.
5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
I have an ATX case I can reuse, as well as monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers. I have a copy of Windows XP Home, and I'm pretty sure I can get my hands on a license of 7 as well.
6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
I've spent several hours looking at threads and also newegg, but I'm stuck in a rut in my own head.
7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
I'd be open to overclocking if it's not too risky, and if I can find guides to doing so.
8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.
I'm using a 17 inch CRT currently, but I'd like to upgrade to a 1920 x 1080 LCD in the near future.
9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
A week or two would be great, but I could hold out for a month or so if the price drops will be significant.
