OK, so as my kids grow faster than weeds I find myself already at the point of building a mission for my 4th grade daughter!!

I hate this kinda' stuff 'cuz it's definitely all on the parents! The written report I've made her do mostly herself, but now we've gotta build this thing! (Uuugh!!!)

Gonna take a trip up to Michael's or whatever craft store to get some materials.

Any suggestions??? (I've seen a book showing "corkboard"?? Also supposedly good to use white paint & put sand in it to paint the mission?? I really don't wanna *buy* a whole bunch of stuff. Would rather get creative....or as creative as possible)

TIA!

I always made awesome projects in school, (Once put 60 hours into a miniture town display), but I have no idea what you are talking about.

If you explain what the project is more I would be glad to help.

Make it out of popsicle sticks and pie tins. First order of business, buy some pie and popscicles. Ice cream cartons too, mmm.

LOL!!!! Sounds like a good plan!!!

For the rest of you............

It's a typical school project (at least here in California) and typically in the 4th grade that kids write a report on a California Mission (Spanish missions of the 17/1800's) and then...........(the dreaded part)..........actually build a model of the frickin' thing!!!

15" x 30" base. My daughter selected the Santa Barbara Mission.

I got a great grade for building a castle out of sugar cubes when I was a kid. Maybe make it out of sugar cubes?

Hmmm..........Might do that if we get desperate, but sugar cubes are a lot of "little" pieces. I think it might be easier with larger materials & just cutting to get the shapes. (???)

In a book my daughter has, they have a small segment about how to build one. Foamboard base, then cardboard cut & shaped into the form of the mission, then accented with whatever "stuff" you wanna put on it, then white paint mixed with sand & painted. Maybe paint the roof red. Done.

Might go that route if I get desperate since it seems to be all laid out. (????)

I made mine using cardboard and a hot glue gun. I bought little plastic trees and horse figurines to decorate the landscape. I think I destroyed it later in a toy soldier urban battle.

I made mine out of card board also. I think i did mine on some remote little mission way up north starting with a Y or something. I can't believe they're still making grade schoolers do this in california. I remember reading that the missionaries made the indians convert and forced them into indentured/slave labor.

LOL!!!!!! Awesome!!!!

Hmmmm...............Lasagna for the roof!!! Might be a good idea!!

I recall actually "stripping" the skin off of cardboard to expose the ribbing underneath which kinda' looked like a spanish tile roof. (I think I drew lines to mock up separate roof tiles, but can't remember.....I might've just left it as is). Then I *think* I spray painted that red. (Not sure, though). Just remember it was a PITA!!!!!

I must have been the only kid who went to school in california and didn't do this project. I've seen a lot of other people that have, though.

An yway, do something different. Build a mission out of matchbooks or old PC parts or legos or something.

When my sister did that exact same project, I do remember a structure she made, it was foam and wood, really stellar looking, unfortunately I don't know where that is..

Well, the mission "REPORT" is very clear about that. The teacher's instructions are even HIGHLIGHTED regarding that matter.

However, the mission "PROJECT" is a different story. What kid could put together a model like that given ONLY their means??? (Not many)

As my next door neighbor just finished up his son's last week, he had to use a table saw, mitre saw, scroll saw & nail gun. I can just see his kid workin' with those tools!!! YIKeS!!!!

It's definitely a "parent" thing whether they want to pretend it is or isn't. Definitely "parents"!!!!!! :(

They have foam kits at Michaels, just about any mission. They also carry the same book with the dark blue cover. It's exactly the same one I got in 4th grade (1987 i think).
I think my report was on Santa Barbara.
