Help w/ 3D Rendering Software

I'm looking to get into some 3D rendering and stuff, and am currently looking around for a good program to use. I have absolutely no experience in this, so I'll need something for nubs.........

I've searched, and found a thread that said Bryce was good for beginners, so, assuming I go out and get it, do any of you know of any good Bryce tutorial sites? Much thanks. 🙂

Bryce is garbage. It doesn't have any real modeling capabilities and all the images say to people is "ah, another fool with a mac making crap for his low budget web page."

I reccomend Caligari's Truspace for a beginner who wants a real all in one package. My web page below has some of my old stuff in a gallery, though I really haven't done anything in years. There's also some free modelers for game characters out there which are actually pretty decent, especially the one based on 3d studio max.

holy sh|t, those are some nice animations. :Q

I especially liked that one part in your "New Day" animation: "Throw the darkness away!" 😉

did you do all of that stuff on your page w/ Caligari's Truspace?

Yep, most of it. (Most of that junk was done 5 years ago when I was a HS senior, freshman in college). It's funny how I could do most of that stuff real time in the Quake III engine now. Still, Truspace is a good starter package, they sell the older versions for a reasonable price. I'd reccomend the Version 4 for $99. http://www.caligari.com/Store/Special/ts4.asp

Yeah, it's some cash to lay down, but there's *nothing* that can compete with it's feature set for that price.

Basically what richleader said. Bryce is great for making outdoor environments, not models. Plus the interface is a b|tch.

Go with trueSpace. Depending on your budget pick up either 4.0 or 5. If you have never done anything with 3D before I would suggest starting off with 4 for the $99(he!l of a good deal there) and make sure you really want to get into it further. 5 made many big improvements, but odds are it will be some time practicing before you would know what to do with them(and you can buy the upgrade to 5 for a discount after you have 4 anyway).

Picking up one of the good books on modeling with trueSpace is also probably a good idea, for someone just starting out tS has an awful lot of features that can be a bit overwhelming. Walking through some of the tutorials in some of the better books is a great way to get the hang of it down for most people. tS does come with an extensive instruction book, but it mainly just gives quick explenations of what the different features do.

I would agree with the previous Posters as well, also take a peek at Animation Master, for IMHO the best all in one package in the Industry, nothing at 10X the price comes close to its feature set. I started with PovRay myself (freeware and very powerful), and have worked with many of the Low End and High End packages.

Another interesting application is gMax, it is a freeware version of 3D Studio Max for modeling and game level design. You can't render scenes or animations, but you can learn to model with most of Max's feature and tool set and with the Tempest Game Pack and Quake 3, its great for creating Quake Models and Levels.

Here is a Linkto explore a variety of 3D applications and sites...

Good Luck to ya!

I have a question:

I really want to get into 3D modeling too...

I am interested in doing some 3D Game characters.

What would be the best program?

Thanks.

Wow, so many suggestions now, I don't know where to start. 😕

I suppose getting a copy of trueSpace 4 would be a nice start, or even DLing that freeware program. Hmmm........

MrCraphead: Hey, LMK if you need help on some 3D stuff... 😉 I've been tinkering with it for too long...😱
