HELP! VOODOO5 RUNNING SLOOOOOOWWWW

Stevey

Junior Member
I had a geforce2 gts in my system(asus v7700) and recently bought the voodoo5. I plopped that sucker in there and out came performance similiar to my voodoo3 2000.
My system is as follows:
Duron600@1000
ABIT K77 Mobo
Global Wil F0P32-1
128 MB PC133 CAS2 ram
20GB Western Digital HDD
Windows 2000(clean install)
Help, please, if you can help, email me at je-kane@home.com

uh, you gotta give more details than that bud

what do you define as "slow" performance?

I can really see the trolls attacking this one real good-like.

Try a total reformatting. According to DaveB3D, there is something about the nVidia drivers that causes problems with 3dfx drivers after installing the new card.

Edit: Oops didn't see your last post. You mean a clean wipe of the old drivers or a "format C:"

3DFX's technical support, may they rest in peace, always stressed the only proper way to change video cards was a complete format and reinstallation of the OS.

he shouldn't have to do a complete format just to install a damn video card. That is ridiculous. I'm sure its because you haven't dled the latest drivers, or your settings are not optimized.

I went from a GeForce GTS to a V5-5500. Had a miserable time. Crashes, horrid performance, weird lines everywhere. I did the nvidia driver uninstall before installing the 5500. No dice. Got the nvidia uninstall routine off of the GeForce FAQ. Still had issues. I was due for a Windows reinstall anyway (once every 6 months, just like my baths) so I did, and had no problems.

Had identical problems when I went to a 64MB GTS from the 5500. Pure hell. Redid windows (blah), 64MB GTS worked fine.

Bizarre as it sounds, it seems, that may be what is necessary.

Are you sure you don't have FSAA on?

Hmmmm, then I may be in for some fun...

I am planning to make a Voodoo 5500 (PCI) coexist alongside a GeForce256 DDR!!

I used to have the GeForce running alongside a Voodoo3 2000 (PCI) without any problems at all; clean OS install, GeForce first card, then all my other stuff, then lastly dropped in the V3, went as smooth as silk...

Guess I might be in for a bit more heartache this time... 🙂

Ok, some problems fixed. I screwed with some BIOS settings and *sorta* fixed it. Set the AGP aperture to 256 and upped the refresh rate. I have the newest drivers there are for Win2k and here is my settings:

Direct3d:

3d filter quality ? Automatic
Alpha-Blending ? Sharper
Anti-Aliasing ? Fastest Performance
LOD Bias - -2
Maximum Buffered Frames ? Default
MIP map dithering ? Enable
Z-buffer optimization ? Enable

OpenGL/Glide:

3d filter quality ? Normal
AA Demo Key ? Disable
Alpha-Blending ? Automatic
Depth Precision (16bit) ? faster
Depth Precision (32bit) ? faster
Anti-Aliasing ? Fastest Performance
Glide Splash Screen ? Disable
Legacy Texture Compression ? Enable
LOD Bias ? 0
Maximum Buffered Frames ? 1 pending buffer
MIP Map Dithering ? Enable
Rendering Color-depth ? Software controlled
Triple Buffering ? enabled
V-sync - disable

Thanks for your help.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that AGP aperature settings have really no effect on Voodoo 3's and 5's, in fact I think it was encouraged that it be set to the lowest possible settings or disabled.

I have a Duron 600 @ 1020 and a V5 ...I can tell you I get a hell of a lot more than 30-40fps in anything ... even at 1280
if you think a 16mb V3 is the same speed as A 64mb V5 then pass that Eggnog ladle over to someone else

Try these settings...

General
Refresh Optimization = Enabled

D3D
3D Filter = High
Alpha Blending = Auto
AA = 2x
LOD = -1.50
Max Buffered Frames = 1 Pending
Mip Map = Enabled
Z-Buffer = Enabled

OpenGL/Glide
3D Filter = High
Alpha Blending = Auto
AA = 2x
Depth Precision (16&32) = Faster
LOD = -1.50
Max Buffered = 1 Pending
Mip Map = Enabled
Triple Buffer = Disabled
Guardband Clipping = Disabled

Thanks for the new settings. I'm gonna dual-boot 98SE and Win2k so that formatting should solve some problems.

Stevey:

Triple Buffering ? enabled

No. It should be disabled. That setting alone has the potential to be causing all of your speed problems.

Thank you for all your help. Everything is running smoothly and I'm gonna get that dual-b00t running soon.
