Depends on what you want to edit. If you want to edit DV. A good, fast and LARGE IDE hard drive or IDE raid setup will do you fine. I don't know the other components of your system, so I can't say what else you might need. To edit DV, you'll need a firewire card as well. If you're looking to put in analog sources, there are many routes. If you're just editing home movies, I recommend the same fast and large hard drives and the Radeon All-in-Wonder. It has some very good video capturing features. Hope this helps!

I am shopping for a new computer and was considering Dell or Micron. I was referring to components so that I can configure the new system.

If you're shopping for a semi-pro/pro system, you might wanna have a look at Promax. They have pre-configured systems for editing. It might save you a lot of headaches later.

But if you just want to do some personal stuff, a cheap OHCI-compliant firewire card or a ATI ALL-IN-ONE will do the trick.

In any case, start building the system from the ground up: first choose which tape format you want to support (dv, betacam, vhs, etc). Then pick your digitizing-I/O hardware and nle software. Once you've done that, check with the manufacturer and/or users (mailings lists and forum) for recommended hardware configuration and STICK WITH THAT.

Which format do you plan to use?
