Hi all,

I'm a newbie on these forums and am hoping someone has a suggestion for my hardware issue. Back in 2005, I built myself a Tyan S2895 MB system with dual AMD Opteron single-core CPUs. Although obsolete nowadays, it was working fine until the Enermax PS blew out with sparks and a burnt smell. I replaced that with a Seasonic 800W PS.

Since replacement, I am faced with a very consistent problem - when I hit the power switch on the MB or the case button, 9 times out of 10, power comes on and the fans will all spin for just a second or so but then everything shuts down. Often, I will then get 4 single beeps. If I try this enough times, eventually, I'll get a full boot.

I've checked all plugs, wires, cables, etc. but to no avail. Perhaps something got damaged when the original PS blew out? Any ideas out there?

Thanks,

Andrew

It's possible the switch itself is the culprit. You can try starting the comp. by shorting the pins with a screwdriver instead of using the switch. If doing so starts without issue, you've found the problem.

You may have damaged the MB or HDD or Memory. After checking the switch, run the manufs. diagnostic on the HDD and memtest on the memory.

Thanks for your thoughts MagnusThe Brewer. I'll try your suggestion tonight. There must be something intermittently damaged on the MB. Once it does power up, the HDs, video card, and 4GB of ECC Corsair RAM all function normally. Long-term, I'm going to build me a Core i7-920 system, but I also have a non-SCSI Tyan S2895 MB that a friend lent me, so I'll set that up until I pull the trigger on a i7 system.
