Help using HDTV as monitor

Simulat

Senior member
I apologize in advance since this is a very basic question; I've just been unable to find a quick answer using google...

I recently purchased a 32" Olevia 232v HDTV which I'd like to use partly as a second PC monitor... my primary monitor is a 22" Acer with a default resolutin of 1680x1050. The 32" Olevia has a resolution of 1366x768. My graphics card is a x1800gto and I am using the latest 6.11 catalyst drivers. I've got it hooked up through the VGA port. It works fine when the bios is butting up but I get a "no signal/invalid format" when Windows loads.

The 1366x768 resolution isn't an option under "display manger" so I've been unable to get it to work. How do I set it up so I can use the 32" HDTV as my second monitor? Do I need a program like PowerStrip? I downloaded it but am not sure how I get about configuring it.

Help is much appreciated, thanks.

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see an option to force that resolution in the Catalyst Control Center.

I messed around with Powerstrip and found an option which placed the 1366x768 resolution into display manger. Now I get a display.. but it is just a sort of "zoom" unto the desktop image I have.. no icons, no mouse cursor, if I play a movie it doesn't show up etc.. so I'm getting a little closer but do not know what I am doing wrong.

Does that monitor have two VGA ins? Have you tried using the other one, if so?

ALso, I'd try using a DVI connection if available.

It's cheap troubleshooting anyway, if you can't get things working with CCC.

WAIT... I think I know what it is! This happened to me a LONG time ago.

I once hooked my computer up to an old school 42" plasma... I forget its native res but it was rather low. Lower than my 20" LCD anyway. I think the TV, not being able to display that same resolution, gave me trouble once Windows started. I had to hook the PC back up to the other monitor, scale down the resolution, THEN go back and hook it up to the big plasma. I'd try that! Since your previous monitor was at 1650x1080, and since the Olevia can't display that res, I bet that's whats happening !

That isn't it. Right now I'm trying to set up dual monitors - so I have the 22" set at 1680x1050 and the Olevia at 1366x768.

I also tried just using the Olevia at 1366x768 as the only monitor. I get a picture/mouse cursor but there are no desktop icons/tool bar/etc and it looks "zoomed" unto my desktop image.

Maybe I'll give it a try with DVI but it seems like it should work with VGA.
