I am the computer instructor for a small adult upgrading school. we are just putting together our first network. I want to use group policy profiles (if I understand this correctly) to control access to applications etc. I just have a few questions that for some reason I could not answer using MS Tech net.
Does the policy profile editor come with either W2K Server or Win98, or do I have to Download/purchase it?
Can I use group policies to control what network folders are visible to each user group independantly of the read/write access restrictions set up on the server? If not, is there some really obvious way of doing that?
If I understand correctly, the policies work by modifying the registry at login. Given this, is there some similar tool for me to lock down certain aspects of other programs (e.g. MS Office) to prevent settings being constantly changed? Our students often operate at very low general and computer literacy levels, so if possible, I would like to set up different groups that have different amounts of control over the settings.
I apologize if any of this seems inane. I am just in the process of trying to figure out myself how to set up and admin this small network. Not a lot of budget, and none for training, so forums like this are a godsend.
