Help upgrading me

Ok, I would like help upgrading my current computer to the best possible CPU ( I will be playing games with this too). Right now I have a P4 3.0ghz, 1GB RAM, 160GB Maxtor SATA HD, ATI X800 XT PCI-E.

I'm also using an Antec P160 case with an Antec NeoPower 480 PSU. I want to keep as much as I can, so I don't think I'll really need anything else other than a new motherboard, processor, and RAM (I'm going to keep my X800 XT for now, I'll upgrade that later).

Thanks.

Your current rig is fine and simply upgrade to 2gb ram. If you want best possible cpu then simply overclock your p4 3.0ghz

You can do both if you want to, nothing wrong with that.
2 gigs would probably be a good idea at this point.

Are you planning on overclocking at all?

No, I dont plan on it. Thats not to say its out of the question, though.

In any case, what would be a good AMD processor to go with?

Really depends on your budget....

A 3000+ A64 939 venice would be a good jump and it would likely be an excellent overclocker as well if you want to push it farther.

If you want to spend more you can of course.
3700+ San Diego
or
3800+ X2 for dual core
are popular ones, but cost significantly more
