I upgraded my old HSF (forgot the name of it, but i bought it from svc for like 12 bux, made of copper with a 60MM fan attached) to an SK7 with a smart case fan II, and my temps are much higher than they were before. with the old HSF my ASUS hardware monitor showed that i was idling at 49C. now with the sk7 and the smart case fan turned to max speed im idling at 63C! i used some arctic silver II between the HSF and CPU, and i have one casefan in the back as an intake and one more on my side panel as an exhaust. the temperature in my room isnt hot at all, so i dont know what the deal is.

one more thing, the smart case fan came with a thermal diode, if the asus monitor is somehow wrong, where do i stick that thing to get an accurate reading?

and lastly my system specs:
AMD athlon XP 1600 (not overclocked, yet)
ASUS A7V333 (with latest BIOS 1017)
512MB corsair XMS DDR333
WD 80 gig
geforce Ti4200
SB live

You may not have the heatsink seated properly. When you clamp one side down, slide the heatsink as far back as you can AWAY from the side with the slot in the clip for the screwdriver. Then fasten the other side using the screwdriver.

The fan you are using is temperature controlled, and may not be spinning very fast. You should check the rpm of the fan. If the thermal diode is of the flat kind, you can tape it to the bottom of the heatsink near where it makes contact with the core.

Make sure you applied a thin layer of Arctic Silver.

Also check to make sure you have the heatsink mounted properly. There is a step in the bottom of the HSF, just like there is a step in the processor socket, make sure that these match up so that the heatsink is sitting level on the die of the CPU.

You should be getting MUCH lower Idle temperatures. If it were me, I would make the side fan an intake so that it blows cool air onto the CPU, and use the rear fan as exhaust to pull the hot air out of the case.

^ this is key, along with the other good advice.

Thank you beatle, that was exactly the problem! i re-appllied the arctic silver and this time seated the HSF so it was as far away from the clip like you said and now im running at a cool 35C. Thanks again.
