help!! university or new stable job??

What do I do?? I have an opportunity for a new job that would be better than the one I have now, but I have been tossing the idea around the idea to go back to university to finish my engineering degree.... I have two days to decide or the job sails. One of the conditions of accepting the job is that I will not go back to university as they are investing training in me by sending me to japan for 6 weeks.... WHAT DO I DO?

Go to school and get your degree. The other choice makes you a slave to a corporation. With a degree,you have choices and many more oppurtunities to explore. Of course,you are the only one who knows your economic situation,so make the choice that benifits you the most.

I just don't think highly of short term solutions to long term problems.😉

IMO you should do what makes you happy. school is important but if there are other factors that make you take the job (family to support, etc) then its what is more important. its never too late for school
 
take the six weeks in japan, real life hands on training and life expieriences are alot better than college university life. . plus that company can't stop you from taking night classes, online courses to get your degree after your done in japan, unless you work for them 24/7 forever. . if you can afford after their trainging to take additional classes on your time, go for it

thegroovyguru: Key info here is your situation in life. If you can afford to go back to school at all, both financially and family wise (married? kids?) then I would likely try to get my degree in your shoes. But only you know all the details and only you can choose!

He's my brother I didn't have any advice for him so I told him to ask here 😀 😛
Just thought I'd get him rolling though.
He coulda mentioned he is 28 and engauged though and already has a good paying but tough job and has no problem with his work experience and technology diploma getting job offers IE this one from Hitachi
Oh yeah and he'd only have to go 3 more yrs as he has 1yr of Engineering completed.
 
I would say school. When you dont have that little white paper people tell you what to do. when you have it you tell people what to do.. But school will always be here and so will the job market. The longer to wait to go back to school the harder it is to go back.. I promise. BUt no one knows your situation.. heheh
Best of luck with your decision, it will only affect the rest of your life.. MUahahahahahah jk ;p 😛
 
I STILL say go with the job, if your engaged, though switching jobs now might be tough, with a wedding coming up
 
I've had a situation similar to this, although it's about my 1st semester of college vs. a super-high paying job.

IMO, I should have chosen to take the job -- First off, to get some experience under my belt, 2nd off, to have the name [lockheed] on my resume, and 3rd off, to make tons of bucks. My first semester of college at University of Colorado @ Boulder SUCKED anway, so that's why I'm bitter about not taking the job instead.

You should do what's best for you; don't turn down the job opportunity of a lifetime if you can get away with it. Make sure you get an education, though -- nightschool / web classes.

ok.. here's the situation. I'm a engineering technologist, 28, engaged, I work for ABB (Asea Brown Boveri - Automation Segment). I do an obscene amount of travel. The job offer is with Hitachi (Steam and Gas turbines). 6 weeks in Japan, same wage as I have now, but no travel. But I have this feeling that the degree would kick open doors, but I'm wondering if I would ever recover the cost of doing it.....

Engineering degree would kick open a lot of doors, but would I ever really recover my costs. It's like going into a black box and not knowing what I'm going to get on the other side....

Well that's a tuff decision. I think it depends on your long term goals. If you eventually planning to go into management I would get a degree. In my company you can't climb the corporate ladder without one. If you want to stay were you are and do lateral moves I would not bother.

Personally I would go for the job but then I love to travel and would jump at the chance to have someone pay my way to Japan.

I think either way you can't go wrong. Hey why not flip a coin.

His fiance says whatever he wants is cool so I told him he should probably go back to school. I don't think hes pressing her enough to find out where she wants to live or any other long range plans though.
Its kinda something he brings up every couple of years so until he does I think it would bother him forever.
He can either go where hes at or move in with me, both have pros/cons.

ok desy... I grilled her last night and she laid a few comments about how she likes Calgary, and wouldn't be able to find a good of job in the netherlands until she get more experience in her field.... so there you go. Now I finally know how she really feels, though she never really came out and said that I shouldn't move there for that job..

University it is, I guess...

I vote for school. This new job may set you up now, but the degree will insure success in the future. I would not bank on this job as a replacement, especially if it doesnt work out.
