Help uninstalling Groupwise client in Fedora

Ok, I'm an idiot and can't figure this out.

I just did a clean Fedora install. Downloaded Groupwise 7 Client RPM from Novell.

Double-clicked on it to install it. Problem is, the server is 6.5 and I can't access it with that client.

Now I can't figure out how to remove the client version 7 to install version 6.5.

If I double-click on the RPM, it says it is already installed. If I go to a command prompt and try RPM -e, it says the package is NOT installed. Groupwise does not show up in the ADD/REMOVE APPLICATIONS list in the gnome menu.

If I attempt to run the Groupwise 6.5 client install without removing it, it tells me there is already a newer version installed.

TIA,

j

Yea, RPM is a bit of a pain to work with. If you do the command that n0c mentions you should be able to figure out what the package name really is and feed that to 'rpm -e'.

Ahh...package name was not the same as the file name. I guess that should have been obvious...doh!

Next up is the Netware client...wish me luck. :)

Thanks guys,

j

Off topic, but... there's a netware client for linux? Oh man, I remember a college I worked at had netware and their client had some cool features back in the 90s that I don't think Microsoft has STILL caught up with yet.

well, if you haven't worked with netware since the 90's, I'm pretty sure microsoft has stolen all the cool features by now.

Not really, there's still the "salvage" feature that MS has yet to implement properly.

OK, I'm getting there, but I've hit a snag and could use a little more help.

I can't get the Novell Client to install because I am missing some stuff it needs. Accorinding to Novell, it requires: gcc, kernel-source, and make.

There doesn't appear to be a search in the Add/Remove Apps thing, so I am trying to get them using yum.

I have been following the directions here: http://www.fedorafaq.org/#yumconf

However, after it installs, I still do not have a yum.conf file and get an error when I try to run it.

Where can I find a proper yum.conf? Or, alternatively, am I doing this a stupid way and should I do it differently??

Thanks much,

j

EDIT: NM, I think my DNS had a brain fart. I just realized that it had timed out when I attempted to wget the conf file the first time and never downloaded it. It's working now. Still would like to know if there is a better way to get these packages than what I'm doing now. Thanks again.

All 3 of those things should be available in the base repositories. I don't think it's necessary, but in /etc/yum.repositories.d open the fedora and fedora-extras files and uncomment the repo and you should be fine.

Ok, I'm it's unable to find "kernel-source"

When you say "uncomment in the repo" do you mean take the .repo off the end of the filename "fedora.repo" and "fedora-extras.repo" or do you mean open those files and uncomment something inside them??

Thanks.

j

EDIT: Ok, opened those two and took the comment out of the baseurl line in them. Looks like they were now searched during the yum, but still no match for "kernel-source"

Ok here are some of the dependencies it says I'm missing. There are more, but many of them I think are because these earlier packages won't install:

error: Failed dependencies:

I'm hoping that first one does not imply that I need to be running KDE instead of GNOME for this to install...???

Thanks for all the help...

kernel-source probaably won't be the exact package name because you need the source for the version of the kernel you're currently using.

Personally, I would just not install the thing. You probably already have the ncpfs tools installed so you should be able to mount any NCP shares and print to Novell printers.

Well, this whole project relatively academic. I'm sure this will never get used, I'm just trying to see if I can get a linux machine setup to do everything it needs to in order to be a functional desktop in the school district I work in. It would need to have Novell client so the teacher could log in and have the login script map various drives and such.

I may try it with SuSE, since that is what Novell bases their Linux desktop off of, mabye that will function with less work.

Even if you install the novell client it won't map drives simply because drive mounting works completely different in Linux. I guess I shouldn't say that it won't since I've never tried it, but I really doubt it would work.

Hey, if Novell says it can automatically mount networked drives in linux, than it can be done. I believe in Fedora the kernel sources are called "kernel-devel" in the yum repositories.

Here is how I suggest you set up yum:
console as root (or superuser mode):
# cd /etc
# mv yum.conf yum.conf.original
# wget http://www.fedorafaq.org/samples/yum.conf
# rpm -Uvh http://www.fedorafaq.org/yum

This will give you the livna repos, setup according to fedorafaq.org. I also suggest doing a yum update after this. To install the novell client:
again, console as root or superuser mode:
# cd /directory_with_novell_client_rpm
# yum localinstall novell_client.rpm
This will automagically grab any needed dependancies and install the rpm.
edit: however, I bet the client is being installed from source, in which case the yum localinstall will do you no good.
