HELP Unable to write to C:? Now no power? What did I do?

Ok, I just got my 8K7A w/ 1.33GHz @266 FSB. I put it in my case with only a videocard and my ethernet card, a hard drive, cdrom, and floppy.
Specs:
512 MB DDR pc2100 crucial
60gxp 60GB
geforce 2 pro 64MB
Network everywhere NIC
Toshiba DVD-ROM
floppy

I booted it up, installed win98se and then it restarts twice, but when it trys to load into windows finally, in gives me this error on the blue screen: Cannot write to C: Then it puts out this long tone and I have to cut the power at the PSU. What is wrong here?

Also, I think I'm an idiot here, but did I fry my PSU by accidentally hooking a floppy up to the power when the power was still on??

This is a bit off-topic but I ordered an 8KtA from newegg and now that I see it looks like this mobo is a piece of sh*t, everybody has been having troubles with it. I hope thats not the case with mine.
As to your problem, connecting things to your mobo while your system is on is always bad, maybe you shorted it out.

I just recently had a win98SE installation go nuts do to a bad ATA66 cable. The worst part was that the cable appeared to be fine. One day win98 just gave me that same error that you describe above. I would suggest trying some different ATA cables if you can. However, it does kinda sound like you might have fried something on your board

How can I test to see if I fried my board or psu or what?
I have a little 250 watt lying around here, can I just hook that to the board and try or is there a way for me to check the dead psu?

Ok, I didnt fry it. I left it unplugged for about 15 minutes and now it's back on. I'm gonna go try different cables now. Hopefully that fixes it.

What kind of PSU do you have. From the symptoms you detailed it sound s like a PSU problem. Check the system monitor in your Bios and check for the 5.0V to see if it's maintaining. If it reads 10% below you might want to take a look on a better PSU.
