HELP! TV repair advice needed

Hi All:

Is it true that you shouldn't mess around with newer TV's, ie, the power still "courses through it" when it's unplugged? I have a fairly new 25-inch Magnavox that "buzz-rattles" almost constantly. The warranty is, of course, expired, and I can't afford to have it repaired or even diagnosed. Anyone have advice? I'm perfectly willing to take it apart and find out where the horrible noise originates (probably lots of dog and cat hair floating around in there), but am concerned about safety. Thanks much!

Andie

It's making me INSANE

Yes You can hurt yourself IF the TV is still Charged up.

If you want to take the cover off and spay it with Compressed air you should be OK. DO NOT Bruch anything off! you it some thing wrong and you will need to get a new tv (and possibly a haircut😀)

If your are getting a rattle it most likely is in a fan (crts have no moving parts). Check if there is a coolling fan.

The TV has capacitors in it that hold electricity. They sometimes stay charged even after you unplug. Also there is a large wire that runs under a seal and goes into a hole in the CRT. If you happened to somehow touch that under the seal, you would probably die. Lots of stuff can go wrong. But if you are careful, just open the back, plug it in, keep your hands BEHIND your back and look around and try to see where the noise comes from.

Dear GOD!!!

You will not be fine if you open it up. You will die.

The high voltage yoke will definatly carry enough charge to kill you. The transformer will probably cary enough charge to kill you. Chances are that there are a half of a dousen other caps which WILL kill you.

One person in my town had to be rushed to the hospital with a stopped heart because he hit a TV, IN A JUNKYARD, with a metal pole, through the CRT.

Once again, DON'T DO IT.

Oh geez.. Just take the back off and dont touch anything.. Find out where the noise is coming from and call a local tv repair shop and tell them what is going on.. Then ask how much to fix it. You will not die by pulling the back off your tv. Just dont be stupid and touch things that you dont know what they are. Seriously, dont touch anything in there, you will more than likely make it worse.

😉

I work on TV monitors all the time. Use common sense, don't go poking large metal objects at the TV and you will be fine.

Go ahead, check it out. You probably will have to track the sound to its source by looking and listening carefully. Don't worry too much about getting shocked just don't touch anything directly, use an insulated screwdriver instead. But be careful as there are things that can be shorted out. Don't touch any of the circuit boards. The main thing that will shock you is the high voltage transformer (in the old days we called it the flyback). It can be identified by a large gauge red wire going to what looks like a suction cup the top the CRT. That normally carries about 20,000 volts. It has the potental to do you some damage.

haha!🙂

I say just open it up and take a look. Just dont touch anything if you're not sure

Remember the part where Bruce Wilis wrapped the monitor and the C4 and the detonators on the chair and pushed it down the elevator shaft??? That was SOOOOO COOOOL!!!!!!!!!! :Q

thanks for all of the excellent advice, y'all. i'll let you know what happens. if you don't hear from me, you'll know i touched the wrong wire😉

I got dibs on your rig and vehicle(s).

😀

Reminds me a funny story from my electronics class.

Our teacher told us to bring in something electronic take apart. Some idiot brought in a tv. When he took the thing apart, he started poking and prodding it with a screwdriver. Of course, he just had to get too close to one of the caps. The thing arced through the screwdriver, into his hand and out his wrist. How do we know the entry/exit points? The arc charred a black hole in the tip of his thumb and base of his wrist. There was no blood as the shock cauterized the wound. He said there was no pain - probably because the nerves would have been killed. He was lucky he didn't kill himself.

Boy we laughed and laughed. Good times. 🙂

Rossman: in the event of my premature demise, you'll receive:

a.) a celeron 500 with 3 HD's totalling 4.3G
b.) a 1987 Honda Accord with just a little bit o' rust

Congrats!

Andie😀

Uh no thanks, you sure that isn't a 1997 Honda Accord?

All newer TV's that I have seen the schematic on have a bleed resistor on the high voltage. About 10 minutes after unplugging the voltage is discharged.

There is a low voltage that is always on in newer TVs with remote controls. You have to have some circuit active to receive the signal.

<< OH YES, indeed. A CLASSIC. 5-speed, 4-door 1987 beauty...😉 >>

Actually I had a thing for a 1998 Honda Accord LXi, it was black, minimal rice, dr00l I wanted that car so badly but I know the driver treated it like sh!t.

UPDATE

I propped up the back-end of the TV with my Russian-English dictionary, and wedged two pieces of wood in front, so it wouldn't do a somersault over the stand, and VOILA! No more rattle-buzz. Go figure.
Thanks for the help, guys.
