Here's what happened, I was using my computer, using the internet without any problems a couple of days ago. I left my computer on overnight. When I woke up the next day I went to use the internet to check e mail and I noticed the internet wasn't working.

I have a D-Link wireless router. I setup a network with my PC, and my laptop. The PC is connected using Cat 5 cable to the router, and the laptop is wireless. I have a cable modem as well.

I called my ISP, and after getting me to try a few things, the technician asked me to try to connect directly from the cable modem to the pc, with no router in between. This solved my problem, and I was able to use the internet again.

I disabled both the Windows and the Firewall router. I did not change any settings in Windows, or on the router itself, at all. It just seemed to have stopped working overnight.

I tried to go back to my original setup and I pinged the router and the ping was succesful. I tried to reset the router to default settings, and it didn't help. I tried to release my ip and it released it. But when I tried to renew it, it times out.

I am back to using a direct connection from modem to pc now, not going through the router. I don't know what to do, can anyone help?

If you did reset the router to factory default and it's still not working, you may have a faulty router. I'd call DLink and try to obtain an RMA (get a speaker phone and drinks ready cause you'll spend a lot of time w/ them), or return the router to the store if it's still within the time frame of return policy.

Once I ran into a very similar situation and MAC address cloning solved the problem somehow. ISP didn't lock down my old MAC; not sure how MAC cloning made a difference, but it worked. You can give it a shot before you call DLink.
