help troubleshoot my garage door opener

This is a pretty new automatic door opener, installed in January. Genie, screw type drive, middle of the road model.

Two nights ago, the door started opening and closing on its own. Sometimes it would fully open/close, and sometimes it would start and reverse. This would happen erratically, but fairly frequently, averaging about once every 5-10 minutes, but sometimes 3 or 4 times in a single minute.

There does NOT appear to be a short in the wall switch circuit, and I have reset the RF frequencies once, and was still happening.

Radio Interference? what frequency to these things operate at?

Malfunction in the receiver?

Ghosts?

TIA

:Q

is your garage haunted? 😛

when it first happend it really freaked me out... i was thinking someone had busted in my car which was parked in the driveway...so I went out there and of course saw nothing, then the door started moving again and it was spoooky.

Replace the motor unit thingy. The thing that has the motor and reciever on it. It could be a bad unit.

just change the code on it. There should be like 10 pins that can either be in the on/off position....any combination will work...just make sure your remote gets synced up with it too

can you turn off the receiver and see if it still happens to make sure it isn't interference?

i don't know... i'll check tonight.

I'd change the codes again. And then if it's still not working, call the manufacturer, see what they say.

good advice. thanks.

Is there a sensor that makes the door go back up if a light beam is broken? My door opener wasn't working right - when I closed it the door would close then go back up - turns out there was a leaf hanging off of a spider web on the inside of the door...when the leaf broke the beam the door would go back up.

your on someone elses frequency..
change the freq on your zapper and recievers.

I have already reset the frequency once. Besides, this was happening at 1 am, and was so erratic I don't think it caused by someone else's garage door signal.

Off topic a bit...
Back when I lived in LA there were these guys that built a system to brute force scan garage door codes. They would drive around neighborhoods transmitting and watching for doors to open, and then go clean them out.

You are getting signal from somewhere else. Maybe a neighbor, or some other device that uses a similiar frequency band. Ask your neighbors to come over and see if their clickers work on your garage. If they do, figure out how to change your clickers so it won't happen.

I've also heard that sunspots can cause this kind of thing *puts on tin foil hat*

If you can get just a logic board for that opener, get it. But Genie openers are throwaways. Your's may still be covered under warranty though.
