I decided to re-install win2k. I boot the system up with WinMe boot disk, format the c partition, run smartdrv.exe, change directory to H:\I386 and run winnt.exe. Now I got a message: Setup was unable to install Windows Boot Loader. Ensure that your c: drive is formatted and that the drive is not damaged.

Of course the drive is formatted and not damaged. I suspect windows me boot disk might be the problem. I desperately seek help. By the way to install dos is not a option which requires to format whole disk and I have some important data in other partitons.

Thanks.

If you have trouble booting from the cd-rom, you can also create 4 boot disks for win2k:
(this is ripped from the microsoft 2k website)

To create a set of Setup boot disks for Windows 2000, run the Makeboot.exe tool from the Bootdisk folder on the Windows 2000 CD-ROM:

Insert the Windows 2000 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type drive:\bootdisk\makeboot a:, where drive is the letter of your CD-ROM drive, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: You do not have to be running Windows 2000 to create the Setup boot disks. For example, you can start your computer with a Microsoft Windows 98 Startup disk, and then run Makeboot.exe from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.

hope this helps =)
