I am using a fresh installation of WinME and I can't get the DMA box under system properties for my DVD drive to check off. I will click it and restart and it won't appear chosen anymore. The odd thing is, that before I reformatted my hard drive, it was able to check off fine (also using winme). I am using the latest intel ATA storage drivers and in the intel companion hardware monitor it reads my DVD-ROM (Aopen 16X) as UDMA-2. Isn't that correct? Than why can't I check off DMA?

Intel software readings:

Secondary Master: AOpen Inc. DVD-ROM DVD-1640 PRO 0113

Default Transfer Mode: UDMA-2

Cable Type (Host): 40 Conductor
PIO PPE: Enabled
UDMA Control Register: Ultra DMA Mode Enabled
UDMA Timing Register: CT = 2 CLK / RP = 4 CLK

Im going insane too... my Creative DVD wont let me enable DMA, I even tried to set it in the BIOS and it turns it back off. :( It works fine in Win2K for me tho.

I talked to a M$ (ugh) tech about this (I'm having the same problems).

Seems that his suggestion is to get a WinME supported drivers for the CDROM/DVDROM/CDR(W) drives if you are having this problem.

Of course I don't really have problems viewing DVDs on my DVD-ROM but I'd be pissed if it did affect it since Pioneer never releases drivers :)

I may have a solution to this, at least this is what *I* have noticed.

In your bios (I'm assuming you all use retail boards, not pre-made boards like from compaq), DO NOT set your CD/DVD Drives to auto unless you need to boot off of them.

Win2k will override your settings no matter how they were set in bois, that is why win2k will allow dma

I'm unsure just how WinME handles them, but if you left the possitions (IE: Secondary Master) to NONE, WinME can then set DMA mode itself, but when you leave it on auto, it won't let you for some reason

Just something to try, hope it helps.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't your computer stop loading if you choose "none" for all your IDE devices in bios?
