The last thing I remember doing is removing old winamp versio 2 something and isntalling version 3. Then all of a sudden my computer just restarted......after i had used winamp 3 a bit (but i dont think winamp has anything to do with this because it has happened once before). So then when it starts up, before i can even get the xp loading screen, i get a message that tells me that the following file is corrupt: C:\windows\system32\config\system

I think OH CRAP.........so I start the computer with the XP installation disk and go into repair mode.....i thought it would actually repair it instead of giving me a dos prompt (silly me....like microsoft actually made some useful tool to help those crashes that millions of us get). Anyway i found an old system file from the C:\windows\repair\ folder and copied the old corrupted one to my D: drive and replaced. Windows started and everything but the old one was 6MB and the new one is 2MB.....also norton antivirus doesn't start properly at startup....or cpu idle.....or something called elbyCheck..........WHAT HAVE I LOST.....WHAT DOES the system file do?? Is there anyway to recover it??? HELP PLEASE!

Would it really be better to copy all of the files (System, Security, Software, etc) from the repair folder to the current, because ive only lost the system file........me being the moron i am, disabled system restore in xp cause i thought that it was useless space being taken up.....i enabled it now.....if it does any good.....anyway.....i also have a registry backup from june......should i replace the current one w/ that one?

my current registry is 30 mb and my backup from june is 40mb..........did I lose some stuff?

another thing i just noticed is that before i was using ATI drivers for my radeon and now windows is using the Microsoft driver......should I just reinstall everything and leave it alone......i.e. drivers, norton, cpu idle, etc....

try running a system file check, go into command prompt and run "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and space inbetween c and /

worth a shot
