Help Switching Cable Modem to New PC

I'm going to be building a new computer soon, and I'll need to migrate my cable internet connection over to the new computer. I've done this before, but it was approximately 3 years ago and I no longer remember how exactly I did it.

Is it as simple as just disconnecting the ethernet cable from the NIC in my current computer and plugging it into the NIC in my new computer? Do I need to copy over any settings or anything? Can someone give me a step-by-step rundown of what I need to do?

It should be that easy with the default settings. If you have to, use the command: ipconfig to view the IP configuration. Use ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew to make sure the DHCP server for your ISP is issuing you your IP correctly.

What cable service do you use? You shouldn't have to do anything.
When connecting your new computer, just power down your cable modem, plug the modem into your router or pc. Then power on in this order:

cable modem--(wait a minute or 2)----router (if u have one,wait another min. or 2)---and then PC's.

might have to call the cable compnay if you are not able to obtain an IP address. This happens when they bind mac addresses, meaning that the IP is binded to your current NIC and won't work on any other NIC. It's no big deal if this happens, just explain the situation to the tech guy
