My computer has just developed a problem where in windows everything suddenly ?shuts down?. By ?shutdown? I mean that the screen suddenly does black, but the power to the computer system is still on. I tried to reboot by pressing ctrl+alt and del but the system would not reboot or neither did the reboot button on the computer work. Only way to start the computer again was to turn on and off the power supply. Then again the system may load to windows and then go black again or ?shutdown? again. On a few occasions windows actually loaded, all the icons were present and everything seemed fine. I could even work on the computer for about 20 minutes before it suddenly ?shutdown? by itself again.

Is it a problem of the hard disk? There are no funny sounds coming from the hard disk though. Problem with the main board bios, config or auto exec files possibly?

Appreciate any comments or suggestions on what I could do to solve the problem or find out what is wrong with my computer.

BTW I am using a athlon 800 with windows Me

this sounds like a power supply problem, what kind of psu do u have?

unless it's a virus, no config or autoexec files could cause this.

If am not wrong my psu is a Hec 300 W. Just got it in November last year. Everything was working well until now although. On trying to reboot, the system often gets to the windows before shutting down although I can hear the power to fan and the computer still running although the reboot button on the comp doesn't work.

My mother is a MSI motherboard with athlon 800.
