help-sony laptop shuts down during install of winxp

so, my friend has an old Sony vgn-fs500 laptop, which she asked me to help fix.

half the time she booted into windows xp home, right as she got into windows (after the windows logo), she got an error dialog box that said: "not enough virtual memory or paging quota is available to complete the specified action", and the computer would shut down.

When I booted the thing up, I got the error message related to lsass.exe

A few times it would boot normally, and I was able to check for spyware, viruses, and trojans, including Sasser, but couldn't find anything.

Then I tried fixing the system hive through the recovery console, except half the time the keyboard wouldn't work in post or after. (sounds like a mobo problem?) I tried UBCD, but it kept freezing. I tried the registry fix with the hive, but eventually kept getting BSOD's.

I then booted into Knoppix successfully, and copied all her files onto an external drive. Then I used dban to zero the drive, and reinstall windows.

Here's where it gets weird: it loads the setup files, and right as it says "setup is starting windows" before the install, the cd drive spins down, and the computer shuts off. I've done this a few times, and the same thing happens right at the same point in the setup process.

Sorry for the really long post, but any thoughts on troubleshooting would be much appreciated. (or just tell me it's time for my friend to get a new laptop 🙂
