My internet works...but just kind of barely. Here's the scoop:

My old system was having problems
(9npa+ ultra, 6600gt, 3000+, audigy2 WD jb something or other), that when I shut down or restart, it just...wouldn't turn back on. I isolated the problem (I think) to the video card, and so ordered a 8600gt from newegg (along with a 4000+ amd chip).

So, those two parts arrived today. I first wanted to switch out the video cards, so I uninstalled the old nvidia drivers...but whoops, I accidentally uninstalled ALL nvidia drivers (the mobo uses nvidia nforce4 drivers). I didn't think too much of it at the time, and sure enough when I go to restart after having removed the old drivers, but not the old vid card, it stalls on the restart. I turn it off, put the new card in, and voila, no problems. I proceed to install the newest nvidia drivers I had already dl'd off nvidia's site, and the new video card works wonderfully. There are a few messages about new hardware things (SBmem controller? something like that?), but I didn't really know what they were. Cancelled, restarted computer to make sure all was good.
Check, and turn off to install the new cpu.
Cpu goes in fine, is recognized correctly, and all seems good. Then I try to open firefox. And nothing. I hit reload several times and I get google to slowly load after several refresh attempts.
I use a D-link wireless card (since my desktop is too far from the router), and it worked perfectly before the updates.
Now, I have no idea what to do, and I'd really like to use the internet on my desktop again :(

Any thoughts, suggestions, and help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

If you have not done it already, uninstall the NVidia Network Manager/Firewall that comes with the Networking Driver.

And if you uninstall the D-Link Wireless card, make sure that you physically remove it, install the drivers FIRST, and only then install the card.

At least that's what was recommended for my D-Link MIMO wireless PCI card.

Good luck!

Thanks for both replies...I'll try uninstalling the d-link and see what happens. The thing is, it still shows the same connection strength as it did before. We'll see if it works.
Thanks, and keep the replies coming!

SWEET! IT'S WORKING AGAIN!
I don't know if it was disabling the nvidia network controller, or just reinstalling the dlink card/drivers, but whatever it was, it fixed the problem.

Thank you so much for the prompt replies. This guy is very happy!

**EDIT**
ARGH I spoke too soon.
It worked perfectly for about 5 seconds. And then it crapped out again, reverting to the same semi-working behavior, despite showing the same signal strength as before.
At the command prompt, I pinged google and got about 45ms avg return speed, and then 3 seconds later, it cannot find host; repeated attempts occasionally yield a ping of ~1300ms.
And this is after reinstalling it for a second time.

If anyone else has any other ideas, I'm willing to shoot for anything. I'm going to swing OD today and pick up yet *another* card...the first d-link I got just didn't work, but the second one did (both model wda-2320).

Sigh.

I returned the d-link to OD, and picked up a nifty belkin USB g+mimo wtfbbq wireless adapter, and so far, so good with it. Easy install and it seems to work no problem. Thanks again for all the help!

Perhaps you could've updated the firmware in the D-Link with the same result.

But it is hard to do with no network, huh...? LOL

Glad you've solved your problem.
