Help! Something is eating my disk space

I'm running WinME and encountering a bizarre problem: my C drive keeps filling up, no matter what I do. The "out of space" notification messages are getting more and more frequent.

I was down to about 75MB free so I freed up some space with the wizard WinME provides. Soon I was back down to that amount or less, so I actually uninstalled a bunch of programs. I purged and compacted my Forte Agent database (I still have 700MB for my favorite newsgroup, ugh). All in all, I cleared up nearly 1.5GB of space.

A couple of hours later I return to my PC to find two IRC downloads aborted because I ran out of disk space.

There are only a couple of files on C: larger than 50 MB--I couldn't find any giant files other than my Agent database. Does anyone know what could be happening, or how I can troubleshoot it? I'm perplexed.

(The background info: home-built PIII-500, 128MB, 30GB drive, 40GB drive, DSL... running Forte Agent, mIRC, IE 5.5, and GetRight.)

I don't personally have WindowsME, but I have read that it has an "autobackup" feature that backs up data intermittently. I have heard people say that the backup folders can grow to be quite large.

Maybe change your heading to ask something along the lines of "how do I stop WinME from backup up files"

Hmm. I'll have to look into that... there's a smallish "_RESTORE" folder, but that hasn't been a problem. For some reason my free space hasn't disappeared over the past day, so who knows...

thanx,

Right click on my computer, go to the performance tab, click file system, then click troubleshooting. Under the troubleshooting tab click disable system restore.
