Help, I am in the process of building a new system. I have decided to go with Asus motherboard intel 850 chipset/Rambus. Should I get a socket 423 or 478? What is the defference between the sockets?
I am looking at the Asus P4T-E or P4t motherboards.
Thanks for the help and suggestions.

The chips are the same speed, though. There are also price differences among sock 423 and sock 478 chips. P4 1.3-2.0 comes in sock 423, and P4 1.4-2.2 come in sock 478, I believe. Sock 478 is Intel's new platform, but knowing them, they could easily create another socket soon, and end the upgrade line for the P4 users 😉

478 is a no-brainer. The 423 has no upgrade path whatsoever.
