I also noticed my sound isn't working any more.

Now I'm getting this error on this lappy I'm on!

Maybe a virus :(

Out of curiosity, are all of you afflicted with this running KaZaA or some similiar p2p file sharing program? My sister recently had this problem on her computer, and I'm trying to find the source... I'm betting on KaZaA...

Direct Connect...

A virus is a virus eh? I just recently got a firewall and a anti-trojan program for crap like this. Even though a firewall is sort of pointless when I have the DC ports open :/

Yeah... but what I don't get is what is so special about today? You all got it today, my sister got it today... it all completely kicked in today and affected so many people...

8/11 - think someone wanted it to be 9/11 and screwed up the code?

I got it once on my desktop a few days (or one or two weeks) ago. I rebooted and didn't think much of it till it started happening over and over again and then spread to the laptop and the other desktop (that I just reformatted today after putting in the FAR WD400BB). :Q

Nothing is special about today.

Its simply a matter of time, when the exploit is new, only a few "intelligent" people know how to abuse it. After a few weeks, every teenage moron has access to it and wants to see how many zombies they can collect.

Pay attention to security briefs and get a firewall.

As I understand it, you don't need to have downloaded the virus in order to have the errors show up.

The errors appear as a result of the remote attack - what is different about this attack compared to older ones like 'Winnuke' is that the virus can be installed during the attack.

So you could have a completely virgin Win2k or XP install - and a computer elsewhere on the internet with the virus, could choose your IP at random, and initiate the attack. As part of the attack, your computer would then download the virus - occasionally, the attack causes your computer to crash with one of the error messages discussed earlier.

This has become apparent in the last few hours because this virus can spread so quickly.

Hey dohyun, can you edit the topic to ask the mods to sticky? Or at least move in the OS forum.. *goes to check that forum out for a sticky

ok if you need to stop your machine fro restarting to download the fix go into services and under the recovery tab in the RPC properties change the failure actions from restart the computer to restart the service. that should stop the system from restarting then you cand run the security updates to plug the hole. This doesn't stop the attack just the restarts you still need to plug the holes with the updates
