Help! Should I buy a new Mobo?

Hello All,

I have the MSI P55-GD80. Great board. I also have the OCZ Vertex Series 60GB SSD drive. I also have the ATI 5870 with their Win 7 64-bit driver.

I keep getting corruptions of one sort or another. Since I have built this rig back in late Octoboer, I have had to reinstall Win 7 4 or 5 times now due ot these corruptions.

I am not sure if it is the Mobo or the SSD drive. When i installed the core i7 860 on the Mobo, my anti-static gloves (which I will never use again) snagged on a couple of the pins sitting in the 1156 socket prior to me placing the proc in there.

At this point, I want something robust, like a Gigabyte motherboard.

Should I just buy the GA-P55-UD3R (or a different one?) and replace the MSI? I do low-level overclocking, nothing serious.

Thanks in advance!

Have you loaded the ocz "firmware update" off their website? It's designed to restore performance by removing certain garbage files that acumulate over time on the ssd. You'll find it on their website under support>ssd tools. And I wouldn't change motherboards. Try this software first.

My OCZ Firmware is up to date, 1.3. I tried to install that tool but it said it was not compatible or something.

I am running 64-bit Win7.

I just ran MemTest+ v4.0, which said it passed (could not see how I coul lattach the image). I ran it for 23 minutes. How long should I run it for?

I checked Win7, and it is not defrag'ing my SSD. It was on my WD 640GB drive, so I turned that off just in case.

Also, when I went to download MemTest, I booted my machine. After entering my password, the screen went all blue, and the Windows Login sound began to play. So far so good. Then it froze, continuing to playing one note in a clipped, reptitive fashion. I had to force a shutdown by holding the power button for 6 seconds.

This is what happens, but in a myriad of different ways. I could be browsing the web and this occurs. Or playing a video game. Then after powering down in this fashion a few times over a period of a couple of weeks (holding the power button for 6 seconds), the Win7 install on my SSD becomes corrupt and I have to reinstall.

So, that's why I think it is my motherboard. Not the memory, and not the SSD.

What do you guys think?

Well, your PSU shouldn't be the issue. If it is a hardware problem, I'm surprised it's not happening more often. Is there any chance the system is overheating?

Doubtful, most time the CPU is in the 30s, and when hard pressed, maybe the 50s.

I just ran Prime95 for like 4 hours and saw now issues at all.

I hope it's not the SSD. I would prefer it were jsut the mobo, so I could get a Gigabyte board.

What do you mean exactly by "corruption"? Do you get something like "xxxx is missing" after POST, and the system doesn't go any further?

No, it's more like it boots all the way to the Windows password and then freezes. Or like today, after I entered my password, the screen turned blue and Windows started playing the login sound. And then it froze, playing the same sound over and over i na clipped, repititve fashion. Then I am forced to do a hard shutdown holding the power button d0own for 6 seconds. This ultiamtely is what I think corrupts the SSD. But what causes the problem in the first place??

Could be the ssd. I would rma the ssd before purchasing a new board. You probably have a backup hardrive; try using maxblast 5 to make an exact copy of the ssd. When you're sure the copy is working, format the ssd and rma it.

Hmm... I just recently built a low-end comp with the Athlon II X2 + MSI mobo (that cheap combo from Fry's). I first got the computer running with 2x512MB Kingston ram and that worked out well, but when I swapped those out with Geil 2x1GB ram, I got random freezing and restarting issues. A friend suggested it was a ram compatibility. So once I got the Kingston ram back in, the computer has been running just fine.

Ocz should have an rma process; try them if your problems persist. I returned my kingston ssd to use the $$ for a new washer and dryer, but the drive worked fine. Will purchase a faster one someday when the price is $100 for the faster chipset at 64 gb.
