HELP! Shall I buy this Barton?

I have a question that I would like to ask for a dear friend of mine:

Ive been offered a 2nd hand Barton 2800+. Im not sure if i should get it tho.

As standard its 2800dk4vd and xxx3x0xxx (cant rem the last three digitd but definately low).

You can see that it has the downgraded from 3.x, but the stepping is lowish : AQXCA.

I think its unlocked - week 34 2003.

No, not if he's wanting to overclock it. XP2500's regularly reach much higher speeds and fsb's than 2800's. The 2800, along with the 2700, and the T-bred 2600's aren't overclockers' friends. Also, if I remember correctly, the lower steppings are the older chips, which is going to further inhibit his chances of a successful overclock. Tell him to buy a new 2500, and spend what he saved on a good motherboard, like an Abit NF7-S.

I think he should buy it. The reason everyone usually buys 2500+ CPU's is because they reach a higher proportional overclock than the other, more expensive CPU's like the 2800+, 3000+ etc. A lower week does not mean it will overclock worse by any means. If you buy a new 2500+ you will have to suffer a locked multiplier, which sucks from an overclockers point of view because you can't play around with it as much and find the best multiplier/FSB ratio for your system.:beer:

If i told you the used 2800+ is the same price as a new 2500+ would it make a difference to your opinions?

I do agree with myocardia that the 2800+ may not be the best chip for OC'ing.

The owner of the local computer store I use has a 2800+ and he can't go any higher than 177-178 FSB with his watercooling setup. I've read other's stories who say the 2800 can't reach 3200+ speeds.

However, check out the OC CPU Database. From the looks at it, ALOT of people are hitting 2.2 or 2.3ghz with 2800+ and air cooling.

LIKE ALL CPU's, some overclock good and some don't, even the 2500+. I'd buy it, period.:beer:

If it is the same price as a new 2500+ then I'd buy it. should be able to do anything a 2500+ can do and the multis are unlocked to.
