help setting up wireless to wired

I am asking this because after spending 1 hour on Dlinks site and another 1/2 hour with an inept csr (like me, but I am inept user) I am in need of help and answers from the Anandtech pros.

I have a wired SMC 7004br. I hooked a Dlink 614+ up to it going from port 1 to 1. I have a wireless adapter (dlink) in my newest laptop. I am told to disable dhcp in the router setup for Dlink by the csr but it won't work. She had me try everything but hopping on one leg. What is the procedure for getting this sucker to work? I am using WinXP.
