I have it hooked up and everything. Windows 98 install disk in the DVD/CD drive and a Windows 98 boot disk in the floppy drive. It boots up to the DOS prompt. I select the D: drive and type setup. Windows 98 setup starts and then I get this:

Please wait while setup initializes
Scanning system registry...
Cannot create a temporary directory
If you have HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard drive,
you will need to create an MS-DOS boot partition to set up Windows

Ok, I have no idea what to do. I mean, I assume I need to create an MS-DOS boot partition, but how do I do that?

BTW brand new hdd

Thanks

You type Fdisk after you've booted into dos with your disk. You have to format the partion after you've created one.

You may not have installed the hard drive correctly. Check the slave/master jumper configuration and whether the cable is reversed or not.

Once the hard drive is installed correctly, boot with your boot disk and run "FDISK" to create a partition(s). Then reboot with your boot disk and run "FORMAT X:" where X is your drive letter to format the partition. You should then be able to go to the "C:" partition and type "DIR" to confirm that the partition is empty.

Now, you are ready to intstall the OS. Good luck.
